A bus decorated with images from World War One will be in service on city streets for the next four years from today.

memorial busImages include a photograph of a wedding between a nurse and an officer who was awarded the VC, Indian soldiers at the Queen Victoria statue in Victoria Gardens, Portslade camp and Robert Whiting, Brighton & Hove Albion’s goalkeeper, who fought in the war, and a poster advertising a war meeting on The Level.

They were sourced from East Sussex Records Office at The Keep, the Royal Pavilion, Museums and Libraries, and private collectors.

Martin Harris, Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Buses, said: “I am delighted that we could work with the council in paying tribute to all those wonderful people of the city who played their part in so many different ways in WW1.”

The bus is a joint venture between Brighton and Hove Bus Company and Brighton and Hove City Council. It was unveiled at a wreath laying ceremony at the Regency Square war memorial today at 10.45am.

The unveiling of the bus is one of several ways in which the city is marking the centenary of the outbreak of WWI across the city yesterday and today.
