People all over Brighton and Hove marked the centenary of the outbreak of World War One by switching off their lamps for Lights Out this evening.
From 10pm to 11pm, people were invited to turn off their lights and light a single candle for a shared moment of reflection.
The moment was inspired by a quote by British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey, who said in August 1914: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
The Brighton Wheel was among those taking part, with just one of its pods lit for the hour:

And Brighton and Hove Albion fans forum North Stand Chat closed its boards and simply displayed Sir Edward’s quote.
