Biscuits prove a kneady time for Brighton baker Kate

Savoury biscuits, Florentines and a 3D biscuit scene show-stopper were a hefty challenge for the 11 contestants in the second round of the Great British Bake Off today (Wednesday, 12 August).

Brighton mum Kate Pritchard made it through the first round of the BBC1 show thanks to the tightness of her Swiss roll.

Starting the show was the signature bake of 36 savoury biscuits.

Kate went for  apple and parmesan shortbread baked with a thin slice of apple on top to prevent the moisture making them soggy.

As her biscuits were not baking evenly Kate moved them around for an even colour.

“It looks so perfect but for me it’s a bit soft underneath,” was Mary Berry’s verdict as she said in the apple let Kate down.

Paul Hollywood was harsher: “I’m debating whether I like them or not.”

Next up the technical challenge to make 18 Florentines using a cut down version of Mary Berry’s recipe in an hour and 15 minutes.

Kate feared hers were over baked as they seemed a little dark coming out of the oven.

“They looked quite nice,” was Paul’s verdict

Mary said: “If they had spread a bit more they would be a bit crisper.”

It was enough to put Kate in fourth place.

“Come on biscuits,” Kate said as she attempted to shape her  dough into a family tea-time scene.

Her human biscuits were baked into a seated position.

As she put the scene together Kate discovered her people wouldn’t stand.

“I could pipe all day and still not be finished”, she said while putting the finishing touches to her display.

Mary said: “I think you’ve been very clever the way you’ve baked those sitting people on the seat,” before praising the lime flavour.

Paul continued with the praise saying: “The bake is excellent, the taste is good and the design is bold and clever.”

A solid performance throughout the show means Kate bakes on into bread week.
