Tributes have been paid to the doctor who died in a car crash on the A27 Brighton bypass on Sunday evening.

Guy Sanders, 46, a consultant in accident and emergency medicine from Newhaven, appears to have crashed into a parked car in a lay-by.

He had worked at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath since 2003 after a nine-year spell in America.

The accident happened just north of Portslade after his car emerged from the Southwick Tunnel.

His 11-year-old son is believed to have been sleeping in the back of his silver Honda at the time of the crash.

Both were thrown from the car when it collided with a parked blue Hyundai at about 7.20pm. The 76-year-old in the Hyundai was unhurt.

Carlos Perez Avila, a consultant in the A&E department at the Royal Sussex from 1984 to 2006, said: “From El Salvador my most sincere condolences to Guy’s family.

“I had the honour and pleasure of working alongside him since he joined our team at the RSCH/PRH.

“He contributed greatly to the departments and was extremely liked by our excellent team there.

“I am so sorry I will not be there to accompany the family on his last journey.”

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Sussex and Princess Royal, said: “It is with enormous sadness that I can confirm that Dr Guy Sanders, one of our A&E consultants, died in a road traffic accident.

“Guy was an extremely respected and well-liked doctor and everyone is shocked and saddened by this terrible news.

“We will find a way to pay tribute to his contribution to the NHS when the time is right.

“Our heartfelt sympathies are with Guy’s wife and children and we are doing what we can to support them.”

I worked with Guy earlier this year in A+E, he was a lovely gentle man, such a shock to hear the news. My thoughts are with his poor wife and children. A big loss to RSCH.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Sanders while he was working at JFK Medical Center in the United States. He was a great physician but most importantly a genuinly nice person that was a pleasure to work with. My condolences go out to his family.

I was at Medical School with Guy and was honored to be a guest at his wedding! There truly are very few people as genuinely kind in this world as Guy. A huge loss to our world. He left me many happy memories. Rest In Peace old friend
