A Brighton electro-pop and dance music festival has been given the go-ahead to move to a new location.
This year’s Shakedown Festival is set to take place at Waterhall in Patcham on Saturday 19 July.
Organisers of the festival were granted landlord’s consent to use Waterhall by Brighton and Hove City Council at a meeting of the Economic Development and Culture Committee on Thursday (23 January).
The one-day event is to run from 12 noon to 11pm with a capacity of 15,000.
Shakedown has been running for three years.
Previously the festival was held at Stanmer Park in September.
Since it began in 2011 major names to appear in the line up have included Example, Rizzle Kicks, Razorlight, Dizzee Rascal and Ed Sheeran.
In 2013 the festival was held across a full weekend.
It attracted 15,000 spectators on the first day and 4,000 on the second day.
Organisers hope that by moving the event to July it will attract more young people who live in the city before they leave for college or university.
Councillor Carol Theobald expressed concern about noise after the event, access to the Waterhall site and potential pollution.
Other councillors voiced their support for the festival.
“It’s a one-off event for the younger generation and they enjoy it,” said Councillor Brian Fitch.
“We must do something for the younger generation.
“We plan hundreds of events across the city, but not much for this age group.”
Councillor Phelim McCafferty said: “It’s a brilliant event for young people and it should be celebrated.”
