Abusive Brighton woman jailed

An anti-social Brighton woman has started a two-month prison sentence after breaching an Asbo with a campaign of violence and intimidation.

Shirley Miles carried out a “terror campaign at a number of council properties in Kemp Town”, according to Brighton and Hove City Council.

The council said that she “abused two vulnerable tenants, using a razor blade to attack and cut a tenant’s face and body, caused criminal damage to council property and stole property and money”.

It took out an anti-social behaviour injunction against Miles in April.

But she breached the injunction three times.

Now, a suspended sentence has been activated and, with a new sentence passed, she has gone to prison.

Maria Caulfield, a member of the council’s ruling cabinet, said: “We will not tolerate any intimidating or nuisance behaviour against our tenants.”

Ellen Burge, a resident of Wiltshire House in Lavender Street, Brighton, said: “I have put up with huge arguments outside my home with lots of shouting and kicking and banging.

“It has been so disturbing and tiring. I am so very pleased with the result.

“It sends a strong message to people and shows what can be done when residents are prepared to report things and go to court.”
