Hundreds of youngsters join 999 crews for road safety event at Brighton’s football stadium

Hundreds of youngsters from Brighton and Hove are due to attend a road safety event at the Amex Community Stadium in Falmer tomorrow (Friday 27 November).

The 16 to 24-year-olds will hear from families who have lost loved ones in car crashes.

They will also see a demonstration showing how the emergency services work together to rescue someone trapped in a car.

Firefighters deal with car crash - genericEast Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, which is organising the event, said: “Between January 2013 and June 2015 there have been 160 killed or seriously injured (KSI) 16 to 24-year-old drivers involved in collisions reported to Sussex Police.

“The show explores the consequences of getting involved in a road collision.

“The show emphasises the dangers inexperienced young drivers may encounter, such as excessive speed, using mobile phones, drinking, drug use and peer pressure.

“The emergency services speak to the students about their experiences, the reactions of the driver and passengers, the medical implications and how seeing such trauma affects them personally.”

The event is called Safe Drive Stay Alive and is at the home of Brighton and Hove Albion to mark the tenth anniversary of its hard-hitting campaign.

Members of the fire service will be joined by colleagues from Sussex Police and the South East Coast and Ambulance Service.

The fire service said: “At the end of the event, it’s hoped that the young people will have an increased understanding of the risks of driving and the consequences for young people involved in road traffic collisions.

“They should be aware of the necessary skills and attitudes required for being both a safe driver and a safe passenger and will understand the role of the emergency services that deal with road traffic collisions.

“The objective is to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the roads of East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

The event is aimed at young people at the age when they are learning to drive, have just passed their test or are becoming passengers with their friends who are already driving.
