More than 400 school age girls have had abortions in Brighton and Hove in the past three years.
The information came to light in a written answer to a parliamentary question tabled by Hove Conservative MP Mike Weatherley.
Mr Weatherley, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity, asked: “How many pregnancy terminations among women under the age of 19 years there were in Brighton and Hove in each year since 2007?”
Health Minister and fellow Tory, Anne Milton, set out figures for the area covered by Brighton and Hove City Teaching Primary Care Trust – also known as NHS Brighton and Hove.
The figures showed that 138 abortions were carried out on girls aged 18 and under last year.
This was down from the 158 terminations in 2008 and the 168 in 2007.
The total over the three years was 464.
Mr Weatherley was told recently that nearly 600 school age children became pregnant in Brighton and Hove in 2007 and 2008 in answer to another parliamentary question.
With 326 teenage girls having abortions in 2007 and 2008, the figures suggest that more than one in two teenage pregnancies in Brighton and Hove are ended by an abortion.
