Charity gigs to raise money for homeless day centre

Two charity gigs are to be held in the next fortnight to raise money for a day centre for homeless people in Brighton and Hove.

On Wednesday, the Brunswick pub in Hove will host Home Grown Help to raise money for Brighton Housing Trust’s First Base day centre for homeless people.

And next Saturday, 4 June, three bands will play at the Freakzone event at the Cowley Club in aid of the same cause.

This week’s Brunswick gig will feature singer/songwriters Rob Godfrey, Alex Moura, Harry Quick and the duo Croft and Cotes. A range of folk, jazz, soul, pop and indie music will be played.

Event organizer, Sam Hughes said: “I have witnessed the struggles and hardships of Brighton’s rough sleepers, young and old. I have been supported throughout my life by friends, family and my community. Some people have not been as lucky as me however.

“With this notion in mind I wish to give something back and help the people in the community who are insecurely housed to change lives for the better.

“I searched for a suitable charity for my event online and found BHT to be perfect for what I aim to achieve.”

Headlining Freakzone at the Cowley Club are Brighton 60’s garage band, Black Rooster Black Shag, with krautrock band Now from London, and the house band Moondrive 71 from Brighton.

After the gig there will be DJ’s and a raffle with the top prize of a windows tablet.  Organizer of the event Tris O’Brien said: “I believe in what BHT does and want money raised from this event to support BHT’s First Base Day Centre.

“It’s great that First Base helps with a range of services for homeless men and women of Brighton and Hove including showers, food, education, housing and health.

“We are looking for further raffle prizes, any donations would be great.”

Simon Hughes, Operational Manager at First Base said: We are very grateful that people want to help and that they recognise the work that we do and want to support us.”

“Any money raised will go directly to providing our essential services.”
