Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding in Brighton and Rottingdean this morning following weeks of drought.

Together with Wednesday’s showers, this morning’s downpours saw almost 5mm of rain in just two hours, sparking callouts for the fire service from 4am onward.

Rottingdean High Street was underwater during the morning rush hour. These pictures were taken by Zac Street.

We’re going to have to get used to this with the climate spiraling out of kilter. Time to head to net zero as fast as we can.

They were nearly all water coming in through ceiling, very probably from blocked gutters or drains which should have been able to handle downpours much worse than this morning’s. Poor maintenance does not a climate emergency make!

I bet the thought of checking gutters for blockages has never entered most people’s heads.

The headline should probably read “ Failure to empty gullies led to flash floods after one inch of rain fell”

Spot on. It’s not like they didn’t know it would rain sooner or later. Get ahead of the game and clear the gullies while the weather is dry.

I hope it helps fill the pond back up in queens park.
