Disco Pete and Brighton’s pink coat lady to host intergenerational disco

Two septuagenarian Brightonians who have danced their way into the hearts of the city will be encouraging people of all ages to throw some shapes at an intergenerational disco.

Disco Pete will be the guest of honour at Timeless next weekend at Brighton Music Hall, where the pensioner has often been spotted dancing along to live music in the summer.

And also appearing will by Ann Shirley Tunstall, better known as pink coat lady after she starred in a video of her dancing in North Street with a gold-lame clad street performer to Twist and Shout.

The free event, held in honour of Disco Pete’s 80th birthday which is coming up this winter, will raise money for Time To Talk Befriending, which puts volunteer befrienders in touch with older people in a bid to tackle social isolation.

Disco Pete said: “Age is immaterial, if you have a talent or hobby, use it – make the most of it, try and inspire others. I love it when little lads copy all my moves. When I’m dancing I’m in a world of my own. Dancing takes you away from life, it’s great for overcoming physical or mental problems. It has excellent health values.

“I get a lot of respect from the young, I very rarely see older people dancing, I suppose they feel embarrassed – I don’t know why. Music is not concerned with age, I’d like to see a lot more people dancing.”

As well as dancing, Ann will also be singing, and has recorded a preview of the song she has chosen here:

The free event is held on Saturday, 17 September from midday to 8pm, and will feature swing music, Bowie and Prince tributes and pop up dance acts.

Please note – there’s nothing listed on the BMH events calendar for this event.
It would also be useful to provide an address and map when giving out the name of a club or building.
    Many thanks,
    Roro
