Bereaved partner pays tribute to Brighton murder victim as fifth man is held

A fifth man has been arrested in arrested after a Brighton man was found murdered at the weekend.

The victim has been named as Craig Palmer, 39, and post-mortem tests indicate that he died from head injuries.

Detectives are not looking for a murder weapon.

His body was found late on Saturday afternoon at a property in Russell Square, Brighton.

The latest arrest is of a 37-year-old man who was held after being picked up in a street in Hove at 7.30am yesterday (Monday 17 January).

Mr Palmer’s partner, Caroline Bambrick from Brighton, paid tribute to a man she described as “a beautiful character who would do anything for anyone”.

She said: “Even if he was short of money he would give you money for your bus fare if he could see you needed it.

“He was a caring man who made everyone laugh no matter how bad you felt.

“We were together for nearly nine years and he called me his princess, and that’s just how he made me feel.

“I can’t believe he’s gone.”

Sussex Police said that Mr Palmer, who had no fixed address, had been living in Brighton for several years although he was originally from the North West of England.

Detectives are trawling CCTV footage from the local area which includes hundreds of shops.

They are also carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

Officers arrested a 40-year-old man at the scene on Saturday.

On Sunday they arrested a 28-year-old man and two men aged 27.

Sussex Police said that the house had been vacant since September after the owner died.

However, officers were called to a disturbance there last Thursday and found that several people were staying there.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan said: “The body was not seen in the house when police visited on Thursday which has helped focus the investigation on what happened there on Friday and Saturday.

“I’m confident people who have visited or stayed at the house in the last few days, and those who live near by, will hold the key to unravelling exactly what has happened.

“This was a violent murder of a man who deserves justice and I would urge anyone who knows anything about his death to help us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
