Wigan stand in the way as Brighton & Hove Albion peer into the Premier League

Manager of Brighton and Hove Albion’s women team dismissed after allegations

Today, Brighton and Hove Albion have the chance to win promotion to the Premier League on their home turf for the first time ever.

38 years ago the rise to the top flight was secured away at Newcastle United. On Saturday 3 May 1979 Albion won 3-1 at St James’ Park.

Since then Albion have twice been 90 minutes from the Premier League.

During the first weekend of June 1991 they lost what was then the Division 2 play-off final to Notts County by three goals to one at Wembley. It remains the club’s most recent visit to the national stadium.

Last May they went to Middlesbrough needing a win to gain automatic promotion but could only draw in controversial circumstances.

Albion will have 92 points if they beat Wigan Athletic this afternoon (Saturday 17 April). The only team in the Championship, other than Newcastle, that can equal that total and effectively draw level is Huddersfield Town.

But the Yorkshire club would have to win every one of their remaining five matches, starting with a trip to Derby County today, to do so. And they would need to overcome a difference of 31 goals in the process. Of course the Seagulls would then have to lose their remaining three fixtures for this Euromillions-type scenario to happen.

Brighton and Hove News will bring you all the action as it happens from 3pm onwards.
