More than 5,000 children, school staff and parents are expected to take part in the Children’s Parade this morning (Saturday 6 May), the opening event of the Brighton Festival.

And thousands more people are expected to line the streets to watch the annual spectacle, believed to be the biggest of its kind in Europe.

About 80 schools have been preparing their costumes in keeping with this year’s theme – poetry in motion.

They look likely to enjoy dry weather with medium to high cloud, not too much wind and reasonably comfortable temperatures.

The parade starts in Kensington Street at 10.30am although youngsters will be gathering between there and Pelham Street.

The parade will follow a route along Jubilee Street, New Road and East Street to the seafront and Madeira Drive where the parade ends at about 1pm.

Here are the road closures being put in place
6am to 3pm – Madeira Drive and Duke’s Mound
8.30am to noon – Pelham Street, Trafalgar Street (Whitecross Street to A259 York Place) and Pelham Square
8.45am to noon – Sydney Street, Gloucester Street (Sydney Street to St George’s Mews), Gloucester Road (Kensington Street to Cheltenham Place) and Kensington Street
10.20am to 12.45pm – North Road (Tichbourne Street to A23 Marlborough Place), Jubilee Street and Church Street (A23 Marlborough Place to Bond Street)
10.30am to 12.45pm – New Road, North Street, Castle Square and East Street
10.30am to 1pm – A259 Grand Junction Road (rolling road closure)
