Sew this is what to do on a Saturday in Brighton

Sea creatures and coral made from wool will bring marine conservation activism to St George’s Church garden in Kemp Town.

The yarnbombing installation co-ordinated by Remade in Brighton, is part of the Summer Sewmance Festival at the venue today (Saturday 3 June).

Since its first outing in July 2016, the independent festival has promoted environmentally sustainable and ethical sewing and crafts.

Founder, Rottingdean mum Stacie Madden, launches her new venture Sewcycle,  a service saving fabric and craft items from landfill for recycling into something new.

She said: “My ambition is to create something that is environmentally sustainable while showcasing local makers and independent businesses.

“It’s important to build up connections with the sewing community and have something for us that’s encouraging upcycling and refashioning.”

Mrs Madden started sewing after taking a class at the Friends Centre, Brighton, to help cope with post-natal depression after having her son four years ago.

She built up a community of like-minded sewists on social media platform Instagram, and decided to bring them together to learn something new.

Julia Hincks who teaches at the Friends Centre  is offering free overlocker workshops. Sew Fabulous, based at the Open Market, also have free sessions on pattern cutting, crochet and customisation.

There are also talks from More Sewing, the Maker’s Atelier, Revival Collective and many more.

Tickets are £2 in advance (plus booking fee) from www.eventbrite.com/e/summer-sewmance-tickets-30259601282 or £3 on the door.

Doors open at 11am until 6pm.
