Strategic housing chief checks progress on new homes in Hove

Housing association bosses gave an on-site update on progress building 65 new homes in Hove to the local Strategic Housing Partnership.

Rhys Daniel, left, from Hyde, Councillor Anne Meadows and Dan Maitland, also from Hyde, check progress on the housing association’s Newtown Road scheme

A basement car park and enabling work on the scheme, in Newtown Road, Hove, was completed in May.

Now work is under way on the concrete frame for the building with work expected to be fully completed in the summer next year.

The project is the latest scheme by housing association Hyde to regenerate an old industrial site to provide a mix of new homes and jobs.

Forty per cent of the 65 new homes will be classed as “affordable” – for a mix of rent and shared ownership.

The site also includes new commercial space which has been pre-sold to a professional services business, creating approximately 12 full-time jobs.

The scheme is a potential catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area, with a number of major redevelopments around Hove station currently being discussed.

Hyde development director Tom Shaw said: “There is a shortage of good quality and affordable homes in Brighton and Hove.

“This scheme at Newtown Road in Hove will provide 26 affordable homes for a mix of rent and shared ownership for residents of the city.

“Our ambitious partnership with the city council to build 1,000 new affordable homes in the area over the next five years will provide more great quality homes at affordable prices for local people.”

Councillor Anne Meadows, who chairs the Strategic Housing Partnership, said: “It has been excellent to see the progress of construction on site as work continues transforming this brownfield site into new homes.

“The scheme also meets the council’s top target to provide 40 per cent affordable housing, including rented homes, for low income households in the city.

“The goal of our Strategic Housing Partnership is to improve housing and access to housing – and support vulnerable residents within the city.”

Something has changed if the Newtown Road redevelopment is meeting the 40% affordable requirement!!!! At Planning it certainly didn’t!!!!

Checked the planning portal it’s been 40%, mix of rent and shared ownership. Looks like you are wrong Valerie.
