Police are targeting motorbike thieves operating in Brighton.

Sussex Police said: “Police have launched an operation to tackle a rising number of moped and motorbike thefts in East Brighton.

“Prevention officers are running Operation Handlebars in a bid to identify and catch the suspects and are appealing to businesses and residents in East Brighton to come forward with any information they may have.”

PC Emma Gee said: “We have seen a rising number of motorcycle thefts in the area, particularly mopeds.

“Not only are the suspects stealing the motorcycles but they are driving them dangerously on roads and pavements without crash helmets posing a risk to the public and themselves.

“Some identified suspects have been caught trying to sell motorbikes and subsequently arrested.

“We are carrying out high-visibility patrols, talking to businesses, residents and partner agencies about this issue and giving out crime prevention advice to motorcycle owners.

“We want to hear from anyone who has information about these thefts to contact us. We have already made arrests and recovered some of the mopeds but are always keen to hear more from our community.”

Sussex Police said: ‘Owners are being advised to lock and chain their motorcycles securely and store them out of sight if possible.

“A 15-year-old boy who cannot been identified for legal reasons was arrested in Moulsecoomb and charged with two counts of stealing a moped, interfering with a motorcycle and resisting arrest. He has been released on bail to attend Worthing Youth Court on (Thursday) 1 February.

“Another 15-year-old from Brighton boy has been arrested for handling a stolen moped and resisting arrest. He has been released under police investigation.

“Anyone with information should contact police online or ring 101 quoting Operation Handlebars.
