Brighton shingle moved to Shoreham to start its drift back along coast

Brighton shingle moved to Shoreham to start its drift back along coast

If you see diggers and big trucks carrying loads of Brighton shingle away from the beach this week, don’t panic – it’s all part of the plan to counter coastal erosion.

Since Monday, Brighton and Hove Council and Shoreham Port have been working together to move some of the pebbles from the beach by the Black Rock car park back to the port’s beaches.

The work will continue throughout next week and should be finished by Friday.

A council spokeswoman said: “The natural drift of shingle along our beaches means that it accumulates by the marina and erodes the beaches in the port.

“This recycling activity helps to redress this process and benefits our beaches as it drifts back once more towards the marina.

“This is one element of a long term coast defence strategy agreed by committee in 2014.”

Please, please, please could they remove some of the shingle from around our fantastic Banjo Groyne? We can hardly see its shape now! The shingle has also amassed there as well as the Marina. This would be brilliant to be done before English Tourism week starts on the 24th March!

It would also be nice if the shingle under the pier was pushed back down to the sea, I remember being able to walk upright under the pier now you have crawl or hunchback

As stated in the article, one it drifts along to the marina, they will shift it back to Shoreham
