A Brighton man has been sent for trial accused of trying to abduct and sexually assault an eight-year-old girl.
Michael Belhawla, 24, of Auckland Drive, Bevendean, was told that he would be held in prison as he waits to learn when he will go on trial.
Belhawla appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court early this afternoon (Wednesday 9 May) to answer the charges.
He is accused of trying to kidnap the girl and attempted sexual assault by touching.
The alleged attack happened in Tidy Street, in the North Laine area of Brighton, at about 8.25am on Saturday (5 May).
Belhawla spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
Martina Sherlock, prosecuting, indicated that she would oppose any application for bail.
But Belhawla’s solicitor, Alison Reeby, did not apply for bail on his behalf.
The bench, with magistrate Nigel Peacock presiding, remanded Belhawla in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday 6 June.
When he appears before a judge at the crown court, a date for his trial will be set.
