The Met Office has issued another heatwave warning as temperatures hit the high eighties in Fahrenheit – topping 30C.

There are concerns about the effects on various groups, with health and care chiefs warning: “The very young, the elderly and the seriously ill are the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems when the weather is very hot.

“In particular, very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse.”

The heatwave warning covers the south east, including Brighton and Hove, for 48 hours from this morning (Monday 6 August).

The Met Office said: “There is a 90 per cent probability of heatwave conditions between 9am on Monday 6 August and 9am on Wednesday 8 August.”

The warning was described as a “heat – health watch level 3” warning, the second highest level of alert out of four.

It said: “The Met Office has issued a heat health watch level 3 for south east England.

“Threshold temperatures for heatwave in South East England are 31C (89F) during the day or 16C (61F) overnight.

“Today looks set to be a fine, dry and hot day with plenty of blue sky and sunshine. There will be very little if any cloud around. Light winds.

“Tonight is going to remain dry with predominantly clear, starry skies and few if any clouds. Winds will remain light, perhaps allowing the odd mist patch to develop. Quite a warm night.

“Tomorrow will remain largely dry with sunny periods and it will become hot again. Somewhat more cloud during the afternoon with the threat of some heavy, thundery showers during the evening.”
