Cardinal Newman reports rise in A-level passes and higher grades

Brighton and Hove state school students have beaten national averages with their A level results, according to the council.

Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Provisional results from the city’s seven education centres offering A levels show that overall

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
  • 34.3 per cent of grades were A* to A – almost eight percentage points above the national figure of 26.4 per cent
  • 61.6 per cent of grades were A* to B – an increase of 2.8 percentage points from 2017 and nearly nine percentage points higher than the national average of 52.7 per cent
  • 98.7 per cent of exams taken received pass grades (A* to E), exceeding national figures

“At AS level, entries are down nationally and locally as a result of the introduction of reformed standalone AS levels.

“Of those who took the exam, top grades (A* to B) went up by 14.9 per cent across all centres.”

Councillor Dan Chapman, who chairs the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee, said: “In terms of high-achieving A level students, we’re way ahead of the national average.

“This is also the sixth year running that Brighton and Hove’s overall pass rate is equal to or above national figures.

“I’m thrilled that so many young people in the city have performed so well and I wish them all the best of luck with their next steps in life.”

The council’s Youth Employability Service is running a live question and answer session on Facebook at 3pm on Friday 16 August.

The council said: “Anyone with questions about their results or who are struggling with their next steps can join in: https://www.facebook.com/yesbrightonhove.

“In addition to higher education opportunities, apprenticeship positions offer opportunities to earn while you learn and get a foot on the career ladder. Some apprentice posts can also lead to a degree.

“Thousands of vacancies are available in a range of industries, from engineering to nursing and law to design. For more information visit https://www.getingofar.gov.uk.

“The council currently has 10 apprenticeships advertised with several more coming up soon. Details at https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/jobs.”
