Albion came back from two goals down to grab a vital away point at St Mary’s.

The Seagulls were fairly woeful in the first half with Saints quite simply all over them.

The home side had plenty of the ball but did very little positive with it.

However, it was a superb strike from Pierre Emile Hojberg, angled into the bottom corner, that put Southampton in front.

Albion’s only real attacking threat was a surging run from Yves Bissouma from his own half to the edge of the Southampton penalty area.

As the first half drew to a close Albion were containing their hosts a little more compactly.

It was a whole different Albion in the second half as the Seagulls now dominated possession.

Chances fell to a Glenn Murray, Anthony Knockaert and Solly March but the Seagulls couldn’t force an equaliser.

Then, against the run of play,Danny Ings won a penalty after Gaetan Bong mistimed a tackle. The former Liverpool striker converted the spot kick himself.

Almost immediately Shane Duffy pulled a goal back for Albion from a Knockaert cross.

The Seagulls then threw everything at the home side. Jurgen Locadia, on as a substitute, still looks unconvincing but certainly put himself about.

Ali Jahanbakhsh, also on as a substitute, linked up well with Knockaert and saw an effort fizz inches wide of the post.

Locadia had a great chance to score from another Knockaert corner but from five yards out saw Saints keeper Alex McCarthy make a wonder save.

Then from the resulting corner James Ward-Prowse appeared to nudge Duffy.

Murray stepped up to convert his second penalty of the season and his fourth goal in five games to pull Albion level, with just 30 seconds left.

Next for Albion, Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday (22 September) at the Amex in the 5.30pm kick off.
