Brighton hospital car parking wins praise

Parking is safe and secure at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, according to the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

The Royal Sussex retained its “pass mark” status after 550,000 vehicles were parked at the hospital without a single vehicle-related incident or crime being reported to police.

The CCTV camera system, good lighting and management of the car parks were credited with the positive report.

The consumer magazine Which? also assessed parking at the Royal Sussex, ranking its car parks in the top third of 140 hospitals in England.

The criteria were

  • support for priority patients
  • fair and flexible charging
  • communication with users

The cost of parking at the hospital – and at other hospitals in England – has previously been the subject of criticism.

In Scotland hospitals are not allowed to charge for parking by law.

Royal Sussex boss Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We do not have enough parking spaces, particularly at the County, and we are addressing this.”

But he was pleased to report the positive feedback to staff about how safe and well run the hospital’s car parks were.

They must be joking! At any busy time the car park is unusable with up to two hours of waiting to get a space. The hospital administration will use these reports as a justification for doing nothing. It is not even possible to deliver an injured person to A&E. Total non-sense!
