A shoplifter from Brighton has been jailed for 12 weeks for three counts of theft and resisting arrest.
Robert Cole, 26, of Grand Parade, Brighton, was sent to prison by magistrates for stealing steaks worth £70 and seven bottles of wine worth £30 from the Co-op in Church Road, Hove.
He also stole meat on another occasion although the amount or value was not known.
He was recorded shoplifting on CCTV and Sussex Police identified him.
Staff at the Co-op town hall branch recognised him from a shoplifting hotlist sent round by the Brighton and Hove Crime Reduction Partnership when he returned to the supermarket.
He was monitored by security staff who saw him empty steaks from a fridge before fleeing the store with staff on his tail.
He was arrested just over a month later – in early June – when he was found with the stolen wine in Kingsway, Hove.
He was charged with three counts of theft and for resisting arrest.
PC Paul Baker said: “Shoplifting hurts the economy, forcing retailers to raise prices for their customers.
“Retailers are taking action to tackle this crime through employing security staff and cameras and through monitoring the shoplifting hotlist.
“This conviction demonstrates the positive result partnership working is having on reducing crime in the city.”
