Brighton driver pays high price for ignoring ticket

An unemployed Brighton man has been charged with slashing a woman’s face with a knife, leaving her with a serious injury that required specialist surgery.

Ryan Rose Jenson, 33, of Bernard Road, Brighton, appeared in court accused of maliciously wounding Sinead Fears, causing her grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court, Jenson was also charged with having a knife in a public place.

The court was told that the attack happened in Thorndean Road, in Moulsecoomb, last Friday (24 May).

Jenson was brought before the bench on Monday (27 May) when he was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 17 June.

Sussex Police issued an appeal for witnesses, saying: “A man has appeared in court after a woman was attacked in a Brighton street.

“At about 9pm on Friday 24 May the 28-year-old local woman was walking home with a female friend along Selsfield Drive, Brighton, near the junction with Lewes Road, when she was cut across her cheek with a knife, causing a serious injury needing specialist surgery.

“Her attacker then ran away south down Lewes Road.”

Detective Sergeant Chris Lane said: “At the time of the incident it is believed that a woman with a male child was a short distance away and we are appealing for them or any other witnesses to come forward.

“This incident is believed to arisen from a previous incident at The Level in the city centre at about 5pm on the same day, which involved an altercation between two men.

“Again, we are keen for anyone who witnessed such an incident to come forward.”

The force said that Ryan Jenson was brought before magistrates on Monday.

They refused to grant him bail to prevent the risk of further offending, interference with witnesses or behaviour that might otherwise obstruct the course of justice.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact Sussex Police online or by calling 101, quoting serial 1533 of 24/05.

Witnesses can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
