Buses were diverted after a sinkhole was spotted in one of Brighton’s busiest roads this afternoon (Saturday 22 June).

The hole opened up in Lewes Road, just south of the Vogue Gyratory.

It was coned off by a member of the public before the council and the police were contacted, with Brighton and Hove Buses staff among those to call with their concerns.

The bus company tweeted at 3.37pm: “Due to a sink hole appearing in Lewes Road by Melbourne St, all Northbound services are diverting via Ditchling Rd and Upper Hollingbury Rd to return to normal route from Lewes Road Bus Garage.”

At 5.27pm the bus company tweeted an all-clear: “We are now able to serve Lewes Road Northbound once again.”

Local resident Penny Hajduk posted a warning on the Bevendean Community Page on Facebook, with a couple of pictures taken by Debora Galende Serravalle: “Be advised, people – a sinkhole has opened in Lewes Road, and it’s growing. Buses are not running between the Open Market and Lewes Road Bus Garage.”

It is not the first sinkhole to have appeared on a main road in Brighton.

In April 2014 a sinkhole opened up on the A259 King’s Road during work on the Fortune of War pub which occupied one of the arches under the road.

And last month another sinkhole appeared on the A259 Wellington Road, Portslade.
