An elderly woman was treated in hospital after being knocked to the ground during an incident in a Brighton street.
The man accused of attacking Janet Stedman last Friday (6 September) was brought before Brighton magistrates the next morning.
Abbas Ahmad, 38, a restaurateur, of no fixed address, was charged with five offences, including assaulting Ms Stedman.
He was also charged with assaulting Special Constable Peter Marshall and obstructing the off-duty officer in the execution of his duty.
The officer said that Ahmad offered him cannabis and the defendant was charged with having 11 bags of cannabis for sale and with offering to supply cannabis.
The bench remanded Ahmad in custody until Friday 4 October when is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court.
Sussex Police said: “A man detained by an off-duty police officer has been charged with committing multiple offences in Brighton.
“Abbas Ahmad was arrested by the officer in London Road shortly before 1pm on Friday 6 September.
“During the incident, an elderly woman was knocked to the floor and sustained a head injury.
“She was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment and has since been discharged.
“Ahmad, 38, a restaurateur, of no fixed address, is charged with assault, offering to supply cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis, assault on an emergency worker and obstructing a police.
“He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 7 September where he was remanded in custody ahead of a pre-trial preparation hearing on Friday 4 October.”
