‘Interstellar’…‘Blade Runner’…’Nanocluster 5’
Scanner

I was alerted to a musical event called ‘Nanocluster 5’ taking place at The Rose Hill (70 -71 Rose Hill Terrace, Brighton, BN1 4JL) on Friday 20th September, whilst walking around Patterns and also the Hope & Ruin in Brighton recently, so I guess the promoters advertising has worked. The posters were in a row and we at the Brighton & Hove News are covering several of the other concerts, but this one was a mystery – I had to find out more.

I called up the concert details and a few links later I arrived on a Bandcamp page for an album titled ‘The Great Crater’ and another album called ‘Fibolae’ both of which had been released this July. I played them both in full and was most pleasantly surprised, as they reminded me of a combination of soundscapes by John Foxx’s ‘Cathedral Oceans’ albums plus Hans Zimmer’s music from ‘Interstellar’, mixed with the ‘Blade Runner’ music by Vangelis as well as the music from ‘The Silk Road’ by Kitaro. That was it, my mind was made up, I have all of the comparison albums and so it would be most enjoyable to witness a live set from the creator of ‘The Great Crater’ and ‘Fibolae’.

Scanner

The creator is known as Scanner and is the alias of British artist and composer Robin Rimbaud. His work traverses the experimental terrain between sound and space connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres. Since 1991 he has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings, the albums ‘Mass Observation’ (1994), ‘Delivery’ (1997), and ‘The Garden Is Full Of Metal’ (1998) hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music.

To date he has scored 65 dance productions, including the hit musical comedy Kirikou & Karaba Narnia, Qualia for the London Royal Ballet, and the world’s first Virtual Reality ballet, Nightfall, for Dutch National Ballet.

Committed to working with cutting edge practitioners he collaborated with Bryan Ferry, Wayne MacGregor, Mike Kelley, Torres, Michael Nyman, Steve McQueen, Laurie Anderson and Hussein Chalayan, amongst many others.

Immersion

Also appearing on the same bill as Scanner will be ‘Nanocluster’ residents Immersion. who a duo made up of Minimal Compact’s Malka Spigel, and none other than Colin Newman, the legendary frontman and founder of art punk band Wire. Blimey! I’ve got Wire’s first two epic album’s ‘Pink Flag’ (1977) and ‘Chairs Missing’ (1978) and now I’m most definitely going to be heading to The Rose Hill, so that I can witness both artists.

Turns out that Immersion have released their latest ten track LP ‘Sleepless’ in 2018. ‘Sleepless’ follows on from the duo’s last album ‘Analogue Creatures Living On An Island’. You can discover the Immersion releases HERE.

The format of a ‘Nanocluster’ evening is for each artist to perform their own sets and then come together at the end for an ‘improv session’. Thus at ‘Nanocluster 5’ you will get three performances by two artists.

The Rose Hill is a compact artist hub so space is at a premium, so if you are intending to attend this concert, then it is advisable to purchase them sooner rather than later! Purchase your tickets from these outlets:

“Since 1991 Scanner, British artist Robin Rimbaud, has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres. He scored the hit musical comedy Kirikou & Karaba (2007) and Narnia ballet (2015) based on the popular children’s book, Philips Wake-Up Light (2009), the re-opening of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 2012 and in 2016 installed his Water Drops sound work in Rijeka Airport in Croatia. His work Salles des Departs is permanently installed in a working morgue in Paris. His latest studio album Fibolae was released in Dec 2017.

Committed to working with cutting edge practitioners he has collaborated with Bryan Ferry, Wayne MacGregor, Mike Kelley, Michael Nyman, Steve McQueen, Laurie Anderson and Hussein Chalayan.” – Captured from Robin Rimbaud’s Spotify profile on 9/13/19 at about 11:05 a.m. EST.

Only because the phrase “has been intensely active in sonic art,” caught my attention and it really shouldn’t have.
