Brighton student injured in French coach crash

A Brighton University student was among the injured when a coach crashed in France on its way from Paris to London.

The accident happened yesterday morning (Sunday 3 November) on the A1 motorway. The Flixbus coach overturned at a motorway exit near the city of Amiens.

Gemma Given, 20, from Northern Ireland, and her boyfriend Jamie Kerr, also 20, a Glasgow University student, suffered head and hand injuries, the BBC reported.

They were treated in hospital although their injuries were described as not being serious.

The Picardy Courrier, the regional newspaper for the area, said that four of the 33 people who were on the coach had been seriously injured.

And the BBC said that eight of the 33 were British, with three of them still in hospital last night.

The broadcaster quoted Jamie’s father John Kerr saying: “It was a pretty traumatic end to a Halloween weekend.”

BBC News said: “It is understood Ms Given, a student at Brighton University, had her bag taken for examination by police because a passenger who was seriously injured had been lying on it.”

Mr Kerr told the BBC: “That brought home to me how close they were to being seriously injured.”

He said that the couple had been offered a bus back to Britain but had said that they would make their own way home.

He added: “I feel a bit more could have been done for them. They’ll learn a lot from all of this but I’m expecting an emotional response when they get home and it all hits them.”

FlixBus said that the coach had a driver and 32 passengers on board when it crashed, adding: “FlixBus is in close contact with the relevant authorities in order to determine the exact cause of the accident and to ensure all passengers receive appropriate support.”
