FALSE ADVERTISING + HIGH PRAISE + HARKER – PRINCE ALBERT, BRIGHTON 19.11.19

False Advertising….It’s back to the Prince Albert tonight for the return of Manchester’s ‘False Advertising’. They previously played Brighton during this year’s Great Escape Festival and a fair number of the crowd here tonight were back for a second helping.

The band are Jen Hingley (vocals, guitar and drums), Chris Warr (vocals, drums, guitar) and Josh Sellers (bass) and this is the second to last date on their current ‘Brainfreeze’ tour which kicked off in Manchester on the 9th November (the day after the release of the new album) and taken in the delights of Liverpool, Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow to name a few and will finish up at the Tunbridge Wells forum tomorrow night.

There has been quite a buzz around the band recently and thought it was time to check them out live for myself and I’m pretty damn pleased I did.

FA are a mix of Sub Pop era grunge and alt-rock, all discordant guitar riffs, fat, filthy distorted basslines, bludgeoning percussion and some anthemic sing-along choruses with Jen’s vocals going from a harsh whisper to all-out screamer.

Tonight we are treated to 13 tracks of which 9 come from this latest platter one being perfect opener ‘You Said’ which is an absolute belter live, far heavier than on record and gets the crowd’s attention early and holds them fast throughout the set. ‘You Won’t Feel Love’ quickly follows, then the slower-paced ‘Uncomfortable’ which again for me outdoes its recorded version.

Hingley and Warr trade places for a couple of numbers and both are just as comfortable in these roles, there’s clearly chemistry evident between these three and it shows throughout the set. Highlights of the night for me were the 2 final numbers, the noisy punk-edged ‘Influenza’ and closer ‘Wasted Days’, the heaviest track of the night, with almost stoner rock riffage and a beautifully spat out chorus and one of the catchiest tracks off ‘Brainfreeze’.

Keep your eyes and ears on ‘False Advertising’, they are a band that catches you off guard and that new album is a real grower!

Earlier tonight we had an opening set from Harker, no stranger to us and this website, but due to other engagements, I missed them tonight. I did manage to catch the second support ‘High Praise‘ who recently were plying their wares up at the Hope & Ruin with Luci Brasi on 27th September. High Praise features members of Gnarwolves, His & Hers and a bunch of other great Brighton bands and they hawk their own brand of 90’s style pop-punk and blasted through a fistful of fast-paced ditties mostly from their recently released ‘Another Day’ EP.
