GURU announce Brighton headline gig

Emerging at the forefront of the city’s raucous punk scene, GURU continue to solidify their growing status; having exploded onto the scene in late 2018 with gripping debut effort ‘Consumer Helpline’, the rising four-piece have wasted little time making a name for themselves, ripping up stages throughout the UK on a sold-out tour alongside Lady Bird and brewing a fierce reputation for their chaotic live shows and charismatic performance.

Evoking heady comparisons to indie figureheads Shame and Fat White Family, the punk quartet’s latest material is a thrilling insight into the world of GURU with potent lyricism, crunching riffage and bold, visceral approach demonstrating their electrifying potential and firmly justifying the hype.

What are people saying about GURU:
“GURU took to ‘The Hope’s’ stage and it was clear that this quartet were going to give a highly charged performance. Vocalist Tom was surely psyching himself up and the other guys followed suit. These youngsters had a preference of plain white vests in order to soak up the sweat. Their half dozen tracks were just about long enough in order to get their ideas across, although I could have certainly done with even more. If the energy and sound of the likes of IDLES, BlackWaters and Fontaines D.C. are your bag, then you seriously need to see these lads perform live!
They should go far and as Tom said during their set “The future of Brighton is bright!” and that totally sums up the whole ‘Triptych’ feeling for Brighton talent!”. – Brighton & Hove News

“Brighton’s Guru… already come bearing the confidence of a band gagging to push things further. Channeling a fizzing strain of eyeball-popping, psych-flecked punk, the likes of recent single ‘Fixation’ come ringing with the same edge-of-seat energy as… some of the capital’s other most promising young upstarts” – DIY Magazine

“Ditching the more distorted sound in favour of a cleaner cut, with palpable percussion and a punky groove, this new instalment is a bracing entry for Guru. Seething with gritty musicality, ‘Fixation’ evidence of their unbridled potential”. – Gigwise

‘Fixation’ – BBC Introducing in Kent’s Record of the Week with Abbie McCarthy

“At times delivering a profound staccato bark, others a full-on yell over a mighty ensemble of guitars and drums; vocalist Tommy Cherrill is on fiery form. As his bandmates amalgamate influences from barbed post-punk to crushing psychedelic riffs, Cherrill’s fury and disdain is both invigorating and imposing in equal measure”. – The Line of Best Fit

‘Suntrap’ – Airplay received on both BBC Radio 6 & BBC Introducing in Kent

“Debut single – proper – ‘Consumer Helpline’ is a stark, electrifying piece of Brutalist indie rock, worth comparing to those initial Shame cuts or even elements of the Fat Whites. Picking apart modern relationships in an era of hyper-capitalism, it reminds us of everyone from Wire to Sports Team, that kind of barbed, deeply British take on art-punk”. – Clash Magazine
