Busy Brighton street faces roadwork chaos

Fresh traffic chaos is coming in Brighton with a warning that gas mains are to be relaid in St James’s Street.

Southern Gas Networks plans to start the work in February.

The plans are to be discussed this evening by the St James’s Area Local Action Team. The LAT meeting starts at 7pm at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church.

Councillor Ben Duncan, one of the Greens on Brighton and Hove City Council, said on his blog: “The never-ending road works look set to continue.

“If you live, work, shop – or just hang out – anywhere near St James’s Street it’s about to get a whole lot worse.

“It’ll be interesting to see how we all manage during any protracted closures of the street.

“I guess the buses will have to be diverted along the seafront and Edward Street, giving us an instant experiment (whether we like it or not) in giving pedestrians priority for a while.”
