A 16-year-old boy who fled from police called to a rowdy party in Brighton ended up in hospital after he ran into the path of a taxi.

Police were called to the party in Hythe Road at 12.35 am on Saturday after teenagers spilled out into the street and started becoming aggressive.

One of the 70 teenagers at the party ran away and was hit by the taxi in Preston Drove at 1am. He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and detained overnight for observation, and was later found to be in possesion of small amount of cannabis.

The driver of the taxi, a 56-year-old man from Brighton was uninjured. The collision has been closed as pedestrian error.

Another teenager was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage to a van, but was later de-arrested for dealing with at a later time.

This is a typical way of reporting an event which involves a teenager. The media like to report in a sensational way to attract readers. How about a different title “Clever, well-liked (by peers and adults alike), conscientious, good, well-behaved school pupil unfortunately knocked down by a taxi after celebrating a friend’s 16th birthday.” By referring to him as a “cannabis teen” readers will think he is a layabout who only smokes pot. This is not the case. The title of your article refers to him as a “cannabis teen” but then in the article text you say that he was found “in possession of small amounts of cannabis”. Not an extreme user of the stuff then! I think if you asked all the teenagers in Brighton if they had tried cannabis you would find that a large percentage have. This sort of reporting does nothing for the respect that we should be affording our younger members of the community.
