More than 100 tonnes of Christmas trees were left for recycling across Brighton and Hove in the past month.
Brighton and Hove City Council said that the 107 tonnes of trees weighed the equivalent of 23 elephants.
The figure was down on the 350 tonnes of trees left last year, possibly because of the exceptionally bad weather in December, the council said.
The trees were left at about two dozen collection points across the area from where they were taken away by the council’s contractor, KPS, to be turned into woodchip.
The woodchip will be used by Cityparks – Brighton and Hove’s parks and gardens team – throughout the coming year.
Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, the council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “Once again residents have done us proud by dropping off a huge number of Christmas trees for recycling.
“We now want to encourage all those residents to carry on recycling their garden waste all year round by home composting or using the council’s two household waste sites.”
