A Portslade man was beaten with a wooden stick after several men forced their way into his flat late on Sunday (20 November).
The 31-year-old was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he was treated for an injured leg and eye.
The attack happened at about 10.20pm on Sunday when the man opened the door to someone who claimed to be a neighbour with a leaking pipe.
Sussex Police said: “As the door opened, several men forced their way into the flat and demanded money.”
A 29-year-old woman who was also in the flat in Downland Court, off Stonery Road, Portslade, was unhurt.
Detective Sergeant Jackie Shaw said: “This was an extremely frightening experience for the couple in their own home and we are continuing to offer them our support.
“We are gathering forensic evidence at the scene and speaking to residents in the local area.
“If anyone witnessed any suspicious behaviour, or knows who committed this offence, they should contact police or Crimestoppers immediately.”
Sussex Police said: “The men ran off with cash and other items in the direction of Stonery Road where a small silver hatchback was parked.”
