A man in his sixties was stabbed in Madeira Drive, Brighton, in the early hours of this morning (Saturday 8 September).
Sussex Police said that officers had arrested a 30-year-old man.
The victim, a local man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex Count Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Sussex Police said that officers were called just after 2.30am and quickly located and arrested the suspect.
Chief Inspector Paul Betts, from Brighton and Hove Command Team, said: “It is too early to speculate on a motive at this time but we have a team of officers who are looking at all possible lines of inquiry.
“We believe that there were a number of other people in the area at the time of the attack who may have seen what happened and we would urge them to come forward and speak to police as soon as possible.
“It is vital that we get as many witnesss as possible in order that we can establish exactly what happened and the circumstances leading up to this horrific attack.
“We would ask the public for their patience and co-operation while investigations continue.
“We are aware of the speedway event that is taking place today and would like to reassure those that are attending that it will not be disrupted as the scene has been reopened to the public.”
The suspect remains in police custody and will be interviewed later today.
