A man will be held in prison while he awaits trial over a hit and run in Brighton which left a woman seriously injured.

Christopher Chan, 31, unemployed, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody by Brighton magistrates on Wednesday (19 September).

Chan is accused of failing to stop after driving into Michelle Greest, 28, from Portslade, on Brighton seafront in the early hours of Sunday 15 July.

She is still recovering from her injuries after being knocked over on the A259 King’s Road near the junction with West Street.

Chan was arrested by Sussex Police on the A27 in Polegate on Thursday 16 August and brought before Eastbourne magistrates on Saturday 18 August.

He admitted stealing a car, driving while disqualified and driving dangerously shortly before his arrest. He also admitted failing to provide a specimen for analysis after his arrest.

He also faces charges of burgling the Wooden Floor Centre in Trafalgar Road, Portslade, on Sunday 15 July and stealing a Vauxhall Corsa in Hove on the same morning.

When he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday he was charged with seven more offences, including the hit and run.

The offences were bilking, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, driving without insurance and burglary.

He was remanded in custody until Thursday 11 October when he is due to return to Brighton Magistrates’ Court.

The bench is expected to commit him for trial in the crown court.
