Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby is hoping the House of Lords will vote his Disabled Persons’ Parking Badges Bill through this afternoon (Tuesday 15 January).
If they do, the Conservative MP’s measure will become law, making changes to the Blue Badge scheme.
The bill – or draft law – is scheduled to have its “third reading” in the Lords at 3.15pm today. This is the last chance for peers to amend or throw out the bill.
It has previously received cross-party support in both the House of Commons and the Lords.
It bypassed the committee stage in the House of Lords because peers supported Mr Kirby’s proposals without amendment.
If the bill is passed today, it should go on to receive the royal assent – usually a formality – and become law.
Mr Kirby said: “This bill will make significant improvements to the Blue Badge scheme, making it much better for disabled people who rely on the availability of disabled parking spaces.
“I am delighted that it has been so well received in both Houses of Parliament, which has allowed it to progress so far.
“It is now on the verge of becoming law, which is fantastic news for genuine users of disabled parking spaces in my constituency and across England and Wales.”
As a wheelchair user & Blue Badge Holder, I want to congratulate Simon Kirby MP for bringing this subject up as a Private Member’s Bill. Hopefully it will pass into Law by the Lords today.
