Brighton film-maker Back2Back has shot a documentary about a daring First World War escape by 29 British officers.

The remarkable true story inspired what became known as the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944, made famous in the film starring Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson.

The programme, the First Great Escape, is due to be screened by Channel Five at 9pm on Sunday (23 March).

It is scheduled to follow a repeat of the popular Second World War film, which also stars James Garner and Richard Attenborough.

The documentary made by production company Back2Back, based in Clifton Hill, Brighton, tells how British prisoners of war managed to tunnel out of a prison camp described as inescapable.

i wonder if this tv show will feature the latest “GREAT ESCAPE ” of about £ 80,000 from a cash point in Manchester Thieves who built a 50ft (15m) tunnel to a cash machine in Salford got away with more than £80,000.

The theft happened on Friday at Tesco on Liverpool Road, Eccles, between midnight and 06:00 GMT, police said.

I find it rather depressing that a large mistake was made early on in the program. While the narrator talked about British prisoners in WWI, the original film footage was actually of German POWs held by the French. If the best clip you have is a farce, why show anything?
