A Conservative MEP who defected from the UK Independence Party has urged electors not to cast a protest vote for her old party in the European elections.
Marta Andreasen, the former chief accountant to the European Commission, said that she has been out meeting people in South East England ahead of the European elections next Thursday (22 May). The constituency includes Brighton and Hove.
She said: “On the doorsteps some people are telling me they are thinking of registering a protest vote. I have been explaining the dangers of doing so.
“With a significant percentage of the laws that affect the UK coming from Brussels, people need MEPs that fight in their best interests at EU level, engaging, changing laws or stopping them in their tracks altogether.
“It very important to vote and elect people who will fight your corner locally too.
“As someone who was in UKIP, I can tell the public that they don’t get involved.
“They take their expenses all right but have some of the worst attendance records when they bother to show up in Brussels and are absent for many key votes affecting us in the UK.
“The public need a party that has gained respect in the EU not by aligning itself with the federalist agenda but by opposing it.
“They need a party with the power and the means to change and achieve things such as the EU budget reduction or withdrawal from the bailout system, both of which the Conservatives achieved.
“Above all though, UKIP cannot and will not deliver a referendum, nor can they negotiate an amicable divorce from the EU.
“Ever since my experience as European Commission chief accountant, where I was sacked by Neil Kinnock for refusing to sign off on accounts that I knew were open to fraud, I have been in favour of the UK’s departure from the EU unless significant powers are repatriated back to us.
“But people need to understand that even after a vote to extricate ourselves from the EU, it won’t happen overnight. The negotiations to reform or disentangle ourselves will take many months.
“We need a solid team to get the best out of the EU. That is why a referendum cannot take place now and why it is wise to wait until 2017. It would be reckless to throw away our most potent political weapon – the threat of our departure so soon.
“But it is not up to me if we leave or not. It is, and absolutely should be up to the public.
“Many would like to continue in the EU but with a different arrangement. In fact they seem to favour the Conservative renegotiation position.
“Whichever camp you are in, the results of any deal with the EU will be taken to the British public in a referendum that – and this is important – only the Conservatives can and will deliver in 2017.
“You see, if you don’t engage, if you don’t get involved you can’t make a difference.
“This is the huge and fundamental contrast between the Conservatives and UKIP. It is why I left them to join the Conservatives and it is also why I firmly believe that a protest vote is a wasted vote. These elections matter.”
UKIP has changed UK politics forever by campaigning to escape eu domination…. Martha is misled if she thinks that asking the jailer not to be cruel and hoping is a plan worth considering. The eu have already made it clear there can be no change to eu fundamentals…no matter how damaging to us in the UK. We pay £55 million a day and get ignored! Cameron’s appeasement plan will get us nowhere. Cameron knows this but doesn’t care because he loves the eu and has said so. Beware Cameron, he’s a trickster with form…he’s tricked the voter before in many ways, many times. Stick with Nigel who tells it straight. Vote UKIP!

I was originally intending to vote UKIP this time, but I think Marta is right – we need to vote in a party which will renegotiate so that we can get the best deal for the UK, and then put that deal to a referendum: do we stay in on the new terms or do we get out? Or, if the EU won’t negotiate (although I’m sure they will in reality because they don’t want us out – they’re getting so much money from us for one thing) then it becomes a simple in/out referendum. People often criticise Cameron for not holding a referendum back in 2010 when he took office, but what good would it have done then? Brown had already signed the Lisbon Treaty before he lost the 2010 election, so the whole point of the promised referendum (whether we should sign up to the treaty) was lost. Most important, we need to vote in the General Election next year for a party which will renegotiate with the EU and give us a referendum on the result.

John Till, I think Ms. Andreasen is absolutely wrong. She knows how corrupt the EU is more than most people – she was Chief Accountant at the European Commission and was forced out of her position when she exposed the obscene levels of fraud and corruption taking place in Brussels. I had a long conversation with her at a UKIP meeting in Surrey a couple of years ago. She held very strident, negative opinions on the EU at that time. What has changed since then? Has the EU mended its ways and become more accountable? Is it more democratic now? I believe Ms. Andreasen is more concerned with her own career than anything else. As for negotiating a better deal for the UK, the only person who was able to do that was Margaret Thatcher; all other politicians since have failed miserably. Cameron is already on record saying he will not honour the result of a referendum if he doesn’t agree with the result. Time to wake up.

Ramjet, I think what’s changed is that Andreasen has realised that: 1. UKIP and its leader are not the most enlightened community, nor are they necessarily the best representatives for the UK, and 2. Voting for UKIP will further weaken the Conservatives who are really the only party likely to stand up to Brussels and give us a vote on the EU. The Conservatives are the only euro-sceptic party who have any chance of forming a government after the general election. So a vote for UKIP might produce the same result as a vote for the LibDems or Labour – people who simply want to get us more and more tangled up with Europe and the dreaded Eurozone. If you vote for UKIP you could end up letting the federalists in.

The EU is already in power over us…and Dave loves it, just like Ed ‘n’ Nick…together they, the Liblabcon, represent the EU Party, Every Which Way but always EU!
Don’t be conned! Trade goes on any way, like it did during the Napoleonic War, there’s too much profit in it to stop it. So what are we paying for? Influence? We can change nothing! With 73 UK MEPs among 750 MEPs means we can control nothing! What a farce! So our trade surplus with the EU must be HUGE??? Isn’t it? No, we have had a trade gap with EU since 1976…the EU profits but we don’t. WHAAT! Quite. What is the point? Guess who pays for most of what the EU does? …you guessed! Germany, and us, the UK!
Who signed us up to that!?
Our daft MPs.
Does ‘MP’ stand for Mug Punters? Are we UK voters being led up the EU garden path? …just to be mugged by the EU with the help of our own MPs?
The answer is, Yes!
The Liblabcon / EU Party are in it together…
Make this week your In-Out referendum and Vote UKIP to escape their EU!
This is your first chance for forty years, don’t miss it!
David Cast-iron cannot give you one…ever!
…unless he wins in 2015, but he cannot win.
Cameron lost against Gordon Brown’s disaster when he, Dave, was sitting pretty and going green!
There is NO WAY he can win now after the suffering he’s caused. We now know how nasty he has been to Disabled people with ATOS tests finding the dying and dead fit for work…
…and spitefully picking on mostly Disabled people with a spare room for no real taxpayer savings. So many Dave failures!
Ipso facto, he will not win in 2015, there will be no referendum…and he’ll blame us, while laughing with his EU-loving pals, “Neat trick, eh? Offer a referendum I knew I would never have to give them. LOL! And they fell for the same trick twice!”, laughs Dave.
Don’t seethe. Don’t get angry. it’s not good for you…stay calm, and show them they cannot take you for a fool and get away with it…VOTE UKIP!
THAT WILL SORT THEM OUT!

John Till, “The Conservatives are the only euro-sceptic party who have any chance of forming a government after the general election”. I have no knowledge of your Mystic Meg like abilities to predict the future, but even Meg cannot predict just 6 numbers out of 50, so perhaps you will forgive my scepticism. Cameron has proven himself to be an outright liar on more than one occasion, yet you counsel we should continue to believe him? Cameron is not a euro-sceptic, he is a dissembler. As for your comment that UKIP are not the most enlightened community, well I could say the very same about Conservative voters, but I confess to prefer honest political discourse to the far easier option of trite disparagement.

Ramjet, Which other party (apart from the Tories) will have any chance of being in government this time next year? The only realistic possibilities are Labour and (if it turns out to be another coalition) the Libdems. UKIP have no chance of forming a government except just perhaps as part of a coalition with the Tories.
So which of Labour and the Libdems will give you a vote on getting out of the EU? Labour have said that they might give us a vote if they intend to export more powers to Brussels (very generous of them) but you won’t get an in/out referendum from them, and the Libdems don’t care – they just want to hand over the whole country to Brussels, no questions asked.

The people can have the MPs and Government they want! That’s the point of democracy. Vote the same; get the same. Vote UKIP; get UKIP! Our UKIP Cabinet and Prime Minister are just waiting to be elected…each party has eleven first team players and a Captain waiting to tell the Civil Service what they want done on behalf of the people. The Civil Service are experts…and will try to do what they are told…they just need direction. Any party the people choose can direct the Civil Service. The choice is there: the Liblabcon EU Obedience Party or UK Independence Party…subservience or Freedom. As more good people realise how they have been betrayed and blatantly lied to for decades by the Liblabcon EU Obedience Party, a.k.a. ‘The Grovellors’…more good people will join and support and Vote UKIP! And we can have our own government again! …working for us instead of against us. Unity, Kindness, Independence, Participation. UKIP for us, by us, of us…us, not EU. nc25may14

John Till, In 1895 the newly formed Independent Labour Party put up just 28 candidates in the General Election and won just 44,000 votes and no seats in Parliament. It takes time for any political movement to gain traction. If, as you quite rightly suggest, UKIP will have no chance of forming a Government after the 2015 elections, just think how much better their chances will be after another five years of a Labour Government, hell-bent on destroying our economy yet again as they always do. I don’t think you need worry about the Lib Dems anymore.
UKIP is very much a grass roots movement and it may take some time before they are in a position to arrest the rot that the three established political parties have allowed to flourish in this once great country of ours. After the recent local and European elections, the political landscape in Britain has changed irrevocably because we now have a fourth political party that listens to the electorate rather than just three who know what’s best for us. Most pundits would concede UKIP has a very real chance of having some MPs elected in next year’s General Election; certainly not enough to form a Government, but very possibly enough to make whoever does form a Government more honest than they are today.
I would ask, sincerely, how many lies will you allow a politician to get away with before you finally cease to trust what they say? If Cast Iron Dave had any integrity we would already have held a referendum on the EU. He’s had five years to make the arrangements. And why 2017? What’s wrong with 2015? I cannot and will not vote for a condescending, bare-faced liar, who is on record saying he will not honour the result of a referendum if he doesn’t agree with it,and I’m afraid that is exactly what Cast Iron Dave is. And Ed. And as for Nick………………
On a purely selfish note I was also happy to see the self-serving Argentinian miss out on being elected as an MEP for Britain.
