Travellers clean up Brighton park after causing damage

Travellers went back to a Brighton park to clean up, having caused criminal damage there, Sussex Police said.

The force said: “Brighton and Hove police asked a group of travellers to return to Preston Park and do unpaid work after they caused criminal damage.

“The group arrived in the Brighton park as part of an unauthorised encampment on (Monday) 30 November.

Preston Park damage caused and later made good by travellers

“A vehicle within the encampment had moved from the concrete area within the park and driven on to the nearby grassland and its tyres caused noticeable damage due to the poor weather conditions.

“Working in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council, the vehicle was subsequently towed from the area and the encampment was directed to the leave the site using emergency police powers.

“The police implemented a community resolution and this resulted in those responsible returning to the park to complete unpaid work assisting the city parks team.”

Sergeant Simon Marchant said: “We encourage travellers to keep away from city parks and will intervene should any crimes identified.

“Should any member of public witness any damaged being caused, please take note of the vehicle’s registration, any descriptions of those involved and contact police on 101.”

sent your colleague some interesting figures on the costs of the relentless clean up operations and how the budget is exceeded by upto 50% over the last 5 years despite massive increases to the target figure
