Catering students set to take part in cooking competition

Third year catering students from City College Brighton and Hove will be putting their aprons on for the third and final cooking competition which will take place on Thursday 30 June to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Brighton and Early Birth Association (EBA).

The ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ style competition has seen students go head-to-head in two knockouts – with guests choosing their favourite menu. Michelin-starred chef, Matt Gillan, will be joining the students and guests for the exciting final.

The final cook-off will take place at The Gallery Restaurant, City College, Pelham Street, BN1 4FA. There are still some tickets left, at £25, which includes a three-course meal cooked by the finalists, followed by a raffle with prizes up for grabs – such as three tickets to afternoon tea at The Grand in Brighton, tickets to the Brighton racecourse, and some fine wines.

All proceedings from the three events will be split between the two charities, which have been selected as City College’s joint ‘Charity of the Year’. The event is expected to raise in the region of two thousand pounds.

Ronald McDonald House Brighton is one of 14 Ronald McDonald Houses in the UK. It has eighteen en-suite bedrooms across two sites, with fully equipped kitchens, lounge areas, and dining areas, offering free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families that have children being treated at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit.

Early Birth Association (EBA) raises money for vital equipment at Trevor Mann Baby Unit, Royal Sussex County Hospital, and also provides support to parents with children in special care units.

Martin Coatsworth, Deputy House Manager of Ronald McDonald House Brighton, says: “We’re so thankful to City College for organising this fantastic fundraising event. We rely heavily on the generosity of our supporters and fundraisers to continue our work and the money will be invaluable in helping towards the running costs of the House.”

The students received intensive training from College Lecturer, Allan Paul, and then Isaac Bartlett from Isaac At Restaurant in Brighton assisted during heat one. Tim Sheed, Sussex Young Chef of the Year and Sous Chef in the Camilla Restaurant at South Lodge, joined the students for heat two.

Programme Area Manager for the Catering and Hospitality Department, Jon File said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase our students’ work through this event. The Hell’s Kitchen experience is the students’ end of year celebration, with most leaving college and moving on to full time employment. The opportunity to support these vital charities is also a significant driver for the event. While clearly beneficial to the charities, it also promotes a sense of community and responsibility amongst the students as they set off on the next chapter of their lives.”

To buy tickets for the final, email Stacey at sp3@ccb.ac.uk or call 01273 667711.
