Man dies in sea at Hove

A man has died in the sea near the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove this afternoon (Sunday 31 July).

Sussex Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to the scene near the southern end of Fourth Avenue but were unable to save him.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “At approximately 2.30pm a member of the public contacted police saying they could see a body floating in the sea near to Hove seafront.

“Police and ambulance attended and removed the body of a male who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police are currently attempting to locate and inform the next of kin.”

Anyone with information about the man or the incident is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk.

In a separate incident shortly 4.45pm the RNLI Brighton lifeboat was called out to help a broken down motor cruiser about three quarters of a mile south of Brighton Marina.

The 58ft vessel had steering failure in a freshening breeze. A volunteer crew member went aboard the broken down boat and managed to sort out the problem on board and the vessel was then escorted back to the Marina by the RNLI.

Yesterday (Saturday 30 July) shortly before 7pm the lifeboat was called out to a broken down yacht two miles offshore and towed it back to safety.

I was there today. Near Maroccos. Saw the lifeguard boat looking towards shore searching, policeman on shore running about. Didn’t see any distressed relatives/friends about. Odd. What happened?

He fell in the night before which is why there were no relatives .he was reported as missing and later found in the sea

Tend to get some homeless people down there, they go down there alone.
