Rail services at a standstill after empty train derails outside Brighton Station

Brighton and Hove commuters are being asked not to travel unless absolutely necessary this morning after a double whammy of a signalling system power outage and a points failure at Haywards Heath.

Power was restored to the London to Brighton signalling system shortly before 8am, but disruption is expected until 2pm.

Southern said: “Power to the railway has now been restored across the network, however your service may still be subject to major delays, cancellations and alterations until the service has recovered. This is affecting Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink services.

“You are strongly advised to refrain from travelling until after 09:30, and delay your journey if possible. Services are now beginning to move across the network.

“Thameslink services running between London Bridge and Brighton are subject to cancellation. Customers are advised to travel from London Victoria or Clapham Junction to Brighton.”
