Labour and the Greens agree to work together on key issues in Brighton and Hove

Nancy Platts

Brighton and Hove has a new council leader (elect).

The Labour group of councillors on Brighton and Hove City Council met today and elected Cllr Nancy Platts as their new Group Leader

Cllr Platts, a former parliamentary candidate in both Brighton Pavilion and Brighton Kemptown and then an aide to Jeremy Corbyn, replaces Dan Yates.

While firmly on the left of the party, she was widely seen as a unity candidate. No other councillor publicly put themselves

forward.

Cllr Nancy Platts said: “I feel honoured to lead the Labour Group and have the opportunity to serve the people of Brighton and Hove.

“I want to thank Cllr Daniel Yates for his leadership through the local elections and am delighted that he will continue to be part of our top team.

“I am excited about delivering our manifesto and working constructively with other parties for the benefit of our city.”

Cllr Nick Childs was elected Deputy Leader, Cllr Daniel Yates was elected Deputy Leader (Finance) and Cllr Clare Moonan was elected Chief Whip.

At the Council AGM on 22 May, Councillor Platts is expected to become Leader of the Council and Cllr Childs, the Deputy Leader of the Council.

So somebody with minimal knowledge of the City is now in charge.I just hope the Greens keep them in check.

She only became a cllr in a by election during the previous Administration & never contributed anything meaningful in any Council or committee meeting that I watched or attended. And now another inexperienced new cllr joins her as a deputy leader.

It will be interesting to see if they have any ability to hold officers to account, to learn how the city is run or if they will just yammer away in tub-thumping ideo-speak. Might be plenty of scope for opposition cllrs to strut their stuff & show them up. Or not.

Minimal knowledge, I don’t think so she is an amazing part of the Brighton community. Get down to Whitehawk area and see what she’s doing.

Something that nobody has pointed out is that it takes only one Labour to go independent, as happened twice last time, and Greens and Labour will have the same number of councillors. A curious situation. As for cllr Moonan wielding the Whip, this is hardly surprising: notoriously, she went round ordering residents to take down their SAVE HOVE LIBRARY (AGAIN) posters.

Nancy Platts – a unity candidate? By whose definition? She hasn’t reached out to the moderate wing of the Labour Party once since 2015, despite most of the activists who worked on her last Parliamentary campaign coming from that wing. Her first act on election to the City council was to attend a Momentum meeting, sharing a stage with the racist Tony Greenstein and chaired by a then suspended member. Hardly unifying.

Time will tell if we will see Cllr Platts at the helm or Cllr Splatt.

Correction! Tony Greenstein is a Jewish anti-racist activist. Jenny Mulligan, you have libelled him here. He is also an estimable historian concerning Israel & the Jewish religion. His stance on Zionism is about politics and is often mistepresented as about Jews per se.

Tell that to the local Jewish population. Especially the elderly ones he verbally abused for going to see a film by a Palestinian.
