Detectives have been given more time to question a man who has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman in the grounds of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.
Andrew Ford, 23, of Bramble Way, Stanmer Heights, Hollingbury, faces up to a further 36 hours in custody after his arrest on Saturday (15 June).
Sussex Police applied to Brighton magistrates for “a warrant for further detention in connection with his arrest for an alleged offence rape and kidnap”.
The case was heard in the Edward Street court yesterday morning (Monday 17 June).
The bench was told that the application was made “in accordance with section 43 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984”.
Sussex Police said: “A 23-year old man arrested on Saturday (15 June) on suspicion of rape, following an attack on a woman in Brighton’s Pavilion Gardens the previous weekend, remains in police custody.
“On Monday morning (17 June) city magistrates extended his detention for a further 36 hours to allow detectives to make further inquiries.”
Detectives have until this evening to charge the suspect or release him.
