Weather chiefs have issued a yellow rain warning for a wide area of southern England including Brighton and Hove.
The Met Office warning forecasts heavy rain from 6am tomorrow morning (Tuesday 26 November) until 3pm on Wednesday.
The official forecaster said: “A combination of a spell of persistent heavy rain and heavy showers that follow will bring a risk of flooding.”
Spray and flooding on roads could disrupt travel and make journey times longer, the Met Office said, and some flooding of homes and businesses is likely.
About two thirds of an inch of rain (16mm to 17mm) is expected to fall in Brighton and Hove in just over 24 hours.
There are also forecasts of strong winds tomorrow, with average speeds of up to 25 mph and gusts expected to top 35mph.
The Met Office said: “A broad area of heavy rain is expected to move northeastwards across this region during Tuesday.
“Heavy showers then follow, these probably heaviest and most numerous on and near coastal areas, especially in Wales and southwest England.
“Conditions also quite windy at times, especially in coastal areas where gales are likely.
“The combination of rain and subsequent showers likely leads to 10mm to 20mm of rain quite widely while over high ground and in locations where showers are particularly frequent 20mm to 40mm may build up in a few places.
“Given already saturated ground following recent rainfall, this brings the chance of further flooding and travel disruption.”
