Brighton & Hove Albion 4 Chelsea 1

Albion beat Chelsea for the first time in over 90 years at a packed Amex.

The Seagulls had two chances cleared off the line in the first four minutes both by Thiago Silva. One was a lob from Leandro Trossard and then a half volley form Pervis Estupinan that the Brazilian headed wide for a corner.

Albion took the lead after Kaoru Mitoma found Trossard who, from close range, angled a drive past Kepa to put Albion in front after five minutes.

The Seagulls were certainly on top. Solly March was terrorising former Albion team mate Marc Cucurella.

From a Solly March corner, England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek inexplicably shinned an effort into his own net to put Albion two goals ahead!

Rob Sanchez made superb saves from Kai Havertz and Conor Gallagher. Sanchez also made a further save from from Gallagher, with the rebound falling to Christian Pulisic who fired wide of a gaping goal.

Albion went further ahead as Mitoma and Moises Caicedo combined and the resulting cross from Caicedo was sliced into his own net by Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea got a goal back soon into the second half as a pin-point cross from Gallagher was met firmly by the head of Havertz.

However, Albion, with a two-goal lead, continued to press and frustrate Chelsea. And after excellent work by debutant substitute Julio Encisco, Pascal Gross bundled in a fourth for Brighton.

Albion haven’t beaten Chelsea since 1933 and today’s performance was a much-needed boost for Roberto De Zerbi’s team.
