Peter Kyle

The Labour MP for Hove has been given a new role as Sir Keir Starmer reshuffled the shadow cabinet today (Monday 4 September).

Peter Kyle becomes the shadow secretary of state for science, innovation and technology as the leadership revamps the party’s top team in Parliament.

Mr Kyle previously served as the shadow Northern Ireland secretary.

He has also been leading the party’s campaign in Mid Bedfordshire where the former Conservative Culture Secretary has now resigned as an MP, with a by-election pending.

Quite impressive given that momentum wanted to deselect him a while back.

Yes quite remarkable. Also, quite remarkable that the Labour Party selected someone to be Science, Technology and Innovation Shadow Cabinet lead when his only experience has been working in the charity sector. Could they have not found anyone with any kind of understanding of the brief? He is a nice guy but he would have been so much better being out on a brief which he had at least some experience in before he became an MP or whilst he has been an MP.

Peter ran his own business I believe so I’m not sure where your getting this information from.

Actually having spoken to him personally I think he would be great for this role, rather than some old fart that knows nothing about innovation.

It’s a question for quite a few roles over the years. There’s some element of being detached enough that you are relying on the expert advice without putting your own subject experience into the mix, but…I guess it could go either way.

Personally, I’d certainly want to be involved in my own expertise area, since it is the area I am most passionate, able to talk articulately, and have the resources and knowledge to find out more in-depth understanding when it is needed.

Is the current Secretary of State for Health a doctor or a nurse?

Has the current Secretary of State for Defence ever served in the military?

What about the current SOS for Science? Is she a scientist?

The answer to all three is no because it’s not required.

The role of s Secretary of State is to guide and oversee their department and that is a political job. It’s not to carry out operations in hospitals or conduct experiments in laboratories.

BTW the current SoS in the department Kyle will shadow has a degree in History and Politics.

The previous defence secretary who was considered excellent was in the military and Grant Shapps is a disappointment as he hasn’t been. You don’t need to be a nurse or doctor to be the health secretary and Steve Barclays isn’t but he has experience of managing large organisations in the insurance industry, extensive experience of trying to get value for money also within public sector organisations. Has Peter Kyle even got a Science A level or O levels as he hasn’t got a science degree or any science or technology relevant work experience? He has relevant experience in housing, foreign aid, education so its a shame that they didn’t put him in a role in which he may have added value.

Grant Shapps is just disappointing period. It doesn’t matter what brief he’s given or what he did in the past.

It seems to me you don’t know him very well! The remarkable thing about Peter is that if he doesn’t know something he will go and learn it. Learning is his thing. Thoroughly. That’s how he got where he is and that is where he will be in his new job. Soon. Just be patient and watch.

I think Brighton Council are aiming more for down town San Francisco at the moment judging by the number of junkie encampments springing up on the beach in Western Road etc.

I’ve never seen a beach on western road and I’ve never seen any junkies on it either.

And when was the last time you were in San Francisco?

A huge amount of money is being misspent on Government projects related to IT and we noticed this weakness during Covid. It will be interesting whether he puts himself to learn and work at this. It is not an easy area.

Shame he unreachable by the people of his constituency. Doesn’t reply to emails or messages. He seems to think he can fob off the people that elected him.
