Gardner Street, Brighton.

Three people were hurt – with two of them suffering serious injuries – in a knife attack in a Brighton street.

Now, a 17-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of assault causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and having an offensive weapon in public.

Another boy, also 17, was arrested and bailed while police investigate what happened.

Sussex Police said today (Friday 7 June): “A teenager has been charged after three people were injured in a Brighton knife incident.

“On Friday 12 January at around 11pm, it was reported that a group of friends were pursued in Gardner Street by two individuals.

“Three people were seriously assaulted, causing injuries to an 18-year-old woman, and serious knife injuries to a 20-year-old man and woman.

“Two 17-year-olds were arrested in relation to the report on Saturday 13 January and were bailed with strict conditions pending further inquiries.

“A 17-year-old boy, from Brighton, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged on Wednesday 5 June with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, assault, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and for assaulting a police constable.

“The teenager was remanded from Brighton Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday 6 June) pending his next court appearance on Tuesday (11 June).”

I have to wonder – if there had been a police presence (on foot) in and around those streets – would this have happened ? We have a high saturation of CCTV in this area yet this seems to have absolutely no deterrent effect.
In fact if CCTV is no longer a deterrent – why are we paying to maintain it ?

Maybe the two boys are more afraid of their paymasters than being convicted. They see CCTV as proof they’ve carried out their masters’ wishes and are willing to take the legal consequences over the gang ones. Or am I being too cynical?

Hmm, maybe you’re giving them too much credit? Seems like very angry young people. I worked with a lad once, who literally went to attack someone because “he looked at me”.

        No other reason.

CCTV provides evidential data used by the rozzers. I wasn’t aware it was intended to be much of a deterrent.

They were obviously evil and idiots. If they wished to attack someone no one with a brain in their right mind would do it in a busy location like Gardener street.

This is b s why protect their names!? And they’re out on bail too? Great I look forward to me being their next target as a 20 year old girl

I very rarely see Police officers out on patrol. Community Policing was effective because it was visible and proactive. It also helped to build stronger relationships between communities and the Police while reducing crime.

“who cannot be named for legal reasons”.
It is time the law was changed. If they are old enough to inflict serious injuries with a knife, then they are old enough to be named and shamed. No doubt the “woke” industry would disagree.

‘Woke industry’? Give over. Not naming under-age defendants / criminals has been the case for far longer than the time period that anyone has realised they can blame everything they don’t like on someone or something being ‘woke’.

just carrying a knife should be a 10 year sentence – and attack with a knife 20 years and a murder with a knife should be life or even death sentence.

I managed to carry a knife as a Boy Scout for most of my teenage years without even as much as a cut finger. It is not the knife that is the problem but the silly people who use them on others..
